The U15 Aztecs fine start to the season came to an end in their top of the table clash with Hatton United. With both sides going into the match unbeaten for the season, something had to give, and after a cagey opening the visitors had an early chance to take the lead courtesy of a controversial penalty awarded after 10 minutes, however the spot kick hit the bar and rebounded to safety. Only 6 or 7 minutes later the Aztecs took the lead, Kyle Clowes firing home impressively from outside the area into the bottom corner. This heralded the start of their best spell of the game, and the Aztecs had chances to double their lead but couldn’t take them.
Shortly before half time Hatton made them pay, as a close range strike saw the sides go in level at half time.
The game continued to be tight early in the second half, but Hatton were gradually winning the battle for midfield supremacy, and when they were awarded another penalty, made no mistake and took the lead. When a Hatton player rose unopposed to head home a corner, the Aztecs were left with a mountain to climb, and despite managing one or two good efforts of their own in the final minutes, couldn’t peg back the visitors.
Aztecs must put the disappointment of their first major underperformance of the season behind them quickly, and learn from the defeat, as next up are last year’s Champions Uttoxeter Juniors.
